Why Are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

by Dr. James Springer 24. January 2011 11:14

I'm asked frequently as to why do I need my wisdom teeth removed?  They do not hurt me, so why have them removed? Extraction of third molars can protect the overall of the mouth.  It is generally recomended when the following conditions occur:

1)   Wisdom teeth only partially erupt.  This leaves an opening for bacteria to enter around the tooth and  causes an infection.  Pain, swelling, jaw stiffness and general illness can result.

2)   Impacted wisdom teeth may continue growing without enough room, damaging adjacent teeth.  This may cause major swelling and/or pain or both.  This pain is very difficult to control with pain medication.

3)   A fluid-filled sac (cyst) or tumor forms, destroying surrounding structures such as bone or tooth roots.

Trivia:

  • On September 20 China celebrates "Love your Teeth Day" - a national holiday promoting oral awareness among its 1.2 billion people.
  • Not long ago, dentures were common wedding gifts in the British Isles because many people expected to eventually lose all of their teeth and expedited the process by having them extracted at an early age.
