2. Bottled Water:

Probably the single most important event is our nation's oral health was the introduction of fluoride in most public water systems.  The effect on reducing the decay rate has been significant.

Approximately 60% of the U.S. population has fluoride in their water supply.

"Fluoride makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before damage is even visible,"

says the Academy of General Dentistry spokesperson Charles H. Perle DMD.  "Studies have shown that the most effective source of fluoride is water fluoridation."

Most bottled waters contain less fluoride than recommended for optimal oral health. So please include tap water into your daily routine.

3. Diabetes:

There is growing evidence that not only many systemic health problems are related to poor oral health but also that poor oral health can contribute to the systemic diseases.

Diabetes reduces the body's resistance to infection.  This creates an environment that can easily lead to gum disease and potential bone loss which is a leading cause of adult tooth loss.

Perle states "Diabetes is directly related to periodontal disease, so seeing the dentist and having your triglycerides and cholesterol levels checked on a regular basis is also crucial."

He also points out that research shows that by maintaining good gum health, diabetics actually can reduce the amount of daily insulin needed.
