5/25/15 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Wednesday

So I've spoken about my healthy eating as well as my husband's and now I thought I should mention my dogs!  We have two black labs who are prone to be stockier.  After we switched vets when we moved to the farm a year and a half ago our new vet kept complaining about one of the lab's being overweight.  This really irked me because I take pride in our whole family being healthy and fit.  I was most annoyed because our dogs were basically going on a walk everyday; if not four to five days a week.  Throughout the week they were also going on hikes and swimming with us.  This way more activity than most dogs get!  Our lab was having trouble with her hind leg and the vet kept blaming it on being overweight.  I had tried reducing her food in the past and she acted starving!  I'm sorry but if my dog gets a lot of exercise then she must be pretty fit; why am I going to starve my dog?  It's not worth it to have her acting hungry all the time.  Then my vet recommended buying a special dog food that expands in her stomach but will make her feel full.  It was a ridiculous amount of money.  No thanks.  I love my dogs but I'm not spending massive amounts of money on dog food.  We were doing Purina.  I opted for some small changes.  We went ahead and started buying Science Diet from Tractor Supply and luckily we have a friend who is a vet and gave us a much cheaper solution!  He suggested giving the dogs a half a can of green beans at dinner.  So now we do a cup in the morning and at night a cup and a half with a half can of green beans.  Both dogs lost about 7 pounds each.  So...if you're looking for a cheaper way for your dogs to lose weight try the green beans.  Our dogs love them!  LOL, I call they're diet Jenny Craig for dogs.  :)
