It's winter time and many of us prefer to eat and drink things that are warm. This usually means that you want to make different soups. I, personally, never feel like I'm truly full after having soup unless I have a sandwich or huge salad with it. Here's the danger with soup: TONS of sodium. Even when you make the soup homemade chicken or veggie stock that's used for the broth is filled with sodium. Just because it's homemade doesn't mean that you've necessarily eliminated all the unhealthy contents that are in a canned soup. Try using reduced sodium broth but the more sure way you can lighten the sodium is honestly to make your own broth. Yep, I said it. That sounds like it would entail a lot but if you're going to the trouble of making your own soup you might as well ensure it's healthy and make your own broth. Use fresh or frozen veggies instead of canned. Use fresh meat instead of sausage (this is processed and heavy with sodium). Lastly, if you have to have some salt use sea salt - at least it's better for you. I honestly had a difficult time finding a recipe that sounded good to me that was both low in fat and low in sodium. Maybe you have a recipe you could share?
